What am I missing here? I've just started Short Sun and it already seems better. And the 'afterward' of Horn saying 'I actually hated these characters so that's why they're portrayed as being awful' is infuriating. Blood was an asshole I guess? Musk was a more-asshole I guess, but he liked hawks? Mucor was. After reading Long Sun, I'm mostly thinking to myself 'Why did we get a full chapter of Silk negotiating the price for Taluses that we never saw purchased' and 'Who cares that there are two Syiufs' and 'Auk is horrible' and 'Why would Silk ever like Hyacinth' and 'I guess Silk randomly wanted to commit suicide'. I swear I read the phrase 'and then a blast sounded right next to me.' about 50 times in the book.Īfter reading New Sun, my mind was filled with gorgeous vignettes that haunted and delighted. The characters were, almost universally, unlikable (save for Mint). There were many things happening, but each was described in such excruciating detail and so obliquely that I stopped caring about them. There was an interesting story here, but I was only shown it via dialogue between the characters referring to the events after the fact. I'd heard that Long Sun continued the tradition and, in many people's opinion, was even better. Over the past year or so, New Sun has solidified in my mind as my favorite novel of all time. I decided to power through and I finished last night. As I said in my previous post, I had been struggling with Long Sun when I was a little over halfway through.
